21 for 2021 | books I definitely want to read this year

07/01/2021

Hoohoo, guys!

I usually don’t pick out yearly TBRs or set a pile of books I am definitely going to read. But I wanted a bit of structure this year and decided to pick 21 books I want to read this year. And I chose those books I’ve been wanting to read anyways, so when I read them all I can at least feel like I accomplished something. It’s the little things, huh?
Dumb as I am, I picked out the books, took photos and only then did I realized that I forgot to add Jade City by Fonda Lee which is on the top of my TBR pile… so it’s actually 22 for 2021 I guess.

Do you make lists or yearly TBRs?

So let’s have a closer look at the books I want to read this year, shall we? You can click on the titles to get to the goodreads pages of the books!

  • The Roommate by Rosie Danan
I’m currently reading this and it is so much fun! I love the writing style and the characters and their interactions. I picked this up because Cam (@justabookeater) hyped this up!
  • Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee
I am in mood for a good scifi and I found this on a good scifi list about 500 years ago and I finally got this book for Christmas so I definitely plan to read it!

stack of books surrounded by plants, the books are from top to bottom, all in paperback: ninefox gambit, raybearer, the deck of omens, the roommate, harley in the sky

  • The Deck of Omens by Christine Lynn Herman
I loved the first book in the series and I am excited to return to those chaotic bisexuals.
  • Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko
This sounds super good and I’ve heard so many good things about this!
  • Harley in the Sky by Akemi Dawn Bowman
I just love Akemi Dawn Bowman’s books and how have I not read this? It has a circus!
  • Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare
Jonas (@theboywhoreadsbooks) has been telling me to read this ever since this book came out and I promise that 2021 will be the year I return into the world of Cassandra Clare by reading this book.
  • Supernova by Marissa Meyer
Why have I not read this yet? I loved the first two books in this series about superheroes and supervillains.

stack of books, on the left are fairylights, on the right is a plant and here are more plants in the background, the books are from top to bottom: aset, wild beauty, the electric heir, darius the great is not okay, full disclosure, the music of what happens, supernova, chain of gold

  • The Music of What Happens by Bill Konigsberg
This sounds like a wonderful read that will make me long for summer and some sunny days. Perfect to snuggle up when it’s snowing outside!
  • Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett
So many people whose reading taste I trust have recommended it!
  • Darius the Great is not Okay by Adib Khorram
Same as with Full Disclosure. This was recommended by so many friends and I seriously can’t believe I haven’t read this yet. And I already own the second book, so I should probably get reading, huh?
  • The Electric Heir by Victoria Lee
It’s dark and slightly fucked up but I absolutely loved the Fever King and need to see how the story continues!
  • Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore
Again, it was recommended so often and I have never read a McLemore book, shame over me!
  • Aset by Roxane Bicker
Ancient Egypt and egyptology in the 19th century and women protagonists? I really liked the first book, so I’m super excited ofr this!
  • Beyond the Black Door by A.M. Strickland
This was highly recommended by Anna (@rattletheshelves) and it has an ace protagonist and apparently a villain romance?? sign me the hell up
  • Crier’s War by Nina Varela
I actually don’t know much about this book except that it’s supposed to be good and has sapphics?

stack of books, surrounded by plants and fairylights, the books are all hardcovers and are from top to bottom: among the beasts & briars, beyond the black door, crier's war, brightly burning, a song of wraiths and ruin, a sky beyond the storm, crown of feathers, the dragon republic

  • Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne
Jane Eyre is my favourite classic and this is a retelling. In space. So two things I love combined.
  • A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown
So many people hyped this up! And I htink it has friends to lovers? My second favourite romance trope?
  • A Sky beyond the Storm by Sabaa Tahir
    I don’t even know. I’m nervous. Will I cry? Probably. A lot.
  • Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto
Has been on my tbr for 500 years, it sounds SO GOOD!
  • The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang
Will I cry more? Most definitely.
  • Among the Beasts & Briars by Ashley Poston
Ashley Poston is one of my favourite authors and I love her writing a lot. And I cannot wait to read this fantasy!
