October is already over, November has begun but mentally I’m still in September. I haven’t really realized that my trip to Scotland is over, a month has passed since then and I’m well back at work. Somehow, I didn’t really do anything in October yet it just breezed by so quickly. At the beginning of the month I was still home with my family but couldn’t do anything because I was sick the whole time. Then I worked, celebrated birthdays and played a lot of LotR: Return of the King on my Playstation. We finally won the level we’d been stuck in for years! Progress! Apart from that, not much happened in my life. So let’s go straight over to look at the books I hauled and read.

WHICH BOOKS DID I READ IN OCTOBER?

This was the perfect light and comforting read for when I was sick. It definitely cheered me up. XOXO is a quick, light read but still brings up problems and discusses them, wether they concern fame, being foreign somewhere and trying to belong or interpersonal relationships. I loved the friendships in XOXO the most and how the group’s trust in each other developed. The romance was a bit of a whirlwind but cute. The story felt like sunshine wrapped in a book.

Part folklore and mythology, part academic struggles and part romance make for a beautiful, mystical story. Combined with an almost lyrical writing style, this book feels somehow real, like a story from ancient times that is told from mother to daughter in dark winter nights. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and how Effy and Preston fit into it, sometimes stand in stark contrast to it and how that makes the story come alive and feel whole. This was the perfect October read for me!
Für eine Liebesnacht by Émile Zola

In “Für eine Liebesnacht” verliebt sich ein schüchterner und armer junger Mann, der zu Träumereien und Flausen neigt, in eine adlige Dame, die nun ihn und seine Liebe gnadenlos für sich ausnutzt. Eine hochdramatische Erzählung, in den die Katastrophe unausweichlich scheint, aber doch auch stets Grund zur Hoffnung bleibt.
Ich mag Zolas Schreibstil unheimlich gern und die ironisch-sarkastischen, sowie aufmerksamen Beobachtungen und Gedanken über die Gesellschaft kommen einfach immer so pointiert rüber. Da meine Aufmerksamkeitsspanne bei Hörbüchern leider nicht so groß ist, liebe ich diese Kurzgeschichten umso mehr. Für eine Liebesnacht ist irgendwie typisch Zola inklusive tragischem Schicksal, verbotener Liebe und verschiedenen Gesellschaftsschichten. Super für Zwischendurch.
Das Zeitalter der Hexenverfolgung: Angst und Aberglaube am Beginn der frühen Neuzeit von Eva-Maria Schnurr (Hrsg.)
Der Beginn der Frühen Neuzeit war auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Deutschlands und in ganz Europa eine Zeit des Umbruchs und der Verunsicherung, in der althergebrachte Wahrheiten infrage gestellt wurden. Zugleich wuchs die Furcht der Menschen vor dem nahenden Ende der Welt und mit ihr die Angst vor Hexerei und schwarzer Magie, die viele für das wahrgenommene Unheil verantwortlich machten. In diesem Buch nehmen renommierte Historikerinnen und SPIEGEL-Autoren das gewaltsame Kapitel der Hexenprozesse und die Schicksale der Opfer neu in den Blick. Sie untersuchen, warum zahlreiche Frauen und Männer als vermeintliche Hexen oder Hexenmeister verfolgt, brutal gefoltert und grausam hingerichtet wurden. Dabei entlarven sie verbreitete Mythen über jene dunkle Epoche und zeigen, dass hinter der Verfolgung oftmals Machtinteressen, soziale Konflikte und politische Rivalitäten steckten.
Tja hm, Begeisterung sieht anders aus. Ich habe insgesamt irgendwie mehr erwartet. Super viel Neues habe ich jetzt nicht gelernt, aber als Einstigerbuch in das Thema Hexen und Hexenverfolgung würde ich das Buch jetzt auch nicht unbedingt empfehlen. Dem Ganzen fehlt ein bisschen die Struktur: Das Buch ist in viele einzelne Kapitel gegliedert, von denen manche Interviews mit Historiker*innen sind, manche sind Fallstudien, wieder andere analysieren Kunst zur Hexenverfolgung. Dabei doppelt sich leider Vieles. Das schließt auch das Vorwort mit ein, das praktisch 1:1 mit dem Beginn des ersten Kapitels übereinstimmt. Hätte man sich auch irgendwie sparen können. Außerdem fand ich es schade, dass das Kapitel zu “Wie funktionierte eigentlich ein typischer Hexenprozess?” ganz am Ende kam, nachdem ich mich durch etliche Fallstudien gekämpft habe und mir das selbst zusammengebaut habe. Außerdem habe ich eine Sache sehr vermisst: Quellen. Woher haben die ganzen Autoren ihr Wissen? Gibt es da Gerichtsakten, die jetzt in irgendwelchen Archiven liegen? Haben Zeitzeugen Tagebuch geschrieben? Familiäres Hörensagen? We’ll never know.
Ein paar Kapitel fand ich dann doch ganz interessant, gerade die mit Bezug auf die damalige Gesellschaft insgesat als auch die mit Bezug zum 20. und 21. Jahrhundert.
Insgesamt aber würde ich Im Zeitalter der Hexenverfolgung nicht unbedingt empfehlen.

James ist jedoch ebenso attraktiv wie verschlossen – und Jude beißt sich an dem Mann mit der falsch herum sitzenden Baseballkappe die Zähne aus. Aber mit jedem Tag, den die beiden streitend nebeneinander arbeiten, verändert sich die Stimmung zwischen ihnen. Und das gefährdet für Judes Pläne …
Ohne Witz, ich lese gerade so viel Kyra Groh und sie entwickelt sich defintiv zu einer meiner liebsten Autorinnen. Pumpkin Spice war leider nicht mein liebstes ihrer Bücher, aber hab ich es trotzdem geliebt? Ja, definitiv. Ich mochte den Mix aus Kleinstadt und Musik, Drama und Humor richtig gerne. Es war einserseits cozy, andererseits realistisch geschrieben.
Ein toller Reihenauftakt und ich freue mich sehr auf die Folgebände.

Mara hat alles im Griff – wenn sie nicht gerade den Zwergspitz ihrer Chefin hüten muss und ihr Verlobter Sebastian sich nicht aus heiterem Himmel von ihr trennt und sie aus der Wohnung schmeißt. Plötzlich steht Maras ausgeklügelter Lebensplan kopf, und sie muss sich nicht nur einen Plan B überlegen, sondern auch eine neue Bleibe finden. Fürs Erste fällt ihr da nur das Co-Working-Office ein. Doch dort trifft sie immer wieder auf Marius. Seines Zeichens Filmemacher, wahnsinnig charmant, sieben Jahre jünger, und planlos glücklich. Also definitiv kein Mann für Mara. Bis sie merkt, dass sie ihm nicht nur seinen Joghurt klauen kann, sondern dass manchmal gar kein Plan auch eine Lösung ist …
Well, well, well,… wer hätt’s gedacht? Ich habe natürlich letzten Monat noch mehr Kyra Groh gelesen. Breakups and Butterflies fand ich richtig, richtig gut. Ich mochte Maras Entwicklung super gerne, wie sie endlich sich selbst akzeptiert und für sich einsteht und ihren Weg geht. Auch die Romance fand ich toll, da sie zwar wichtig war, aber nicht zu prominent. Auch wie Marius Mara unterstützt, ihr aber gleichzeitig genau den Freiraum und die Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten gibt, die sie braucht, ahebn ihn super sympathisch gemacht. Der Humor war einfach 1A, ich habe gekichert und gelacht. Und mit den Figuren mitgelitten. Und mich gefreut, als Mara endlich zum Rundumschlag gegen gewissen Personen ausgeholt hat. Definitiv mein liebstes Oktoberbuch, liebs, 10/10.

Opening a My Vampires novel is like coming home: a warm hug. And Road Trip wasn’t an exception. It’s the perfect blend of weird and sexy, fun and romantic. It features warm friendships, goat yoga and a road trip that brings both answers and more questions. I liked Zelda and Peter’s relationship and how it develops. I also enjoyed how these vampires fit (or don’t fit) into modern human society. It was a bit more serious than its two predecessors but there still was the humor, too. I enjoyed this finale a lot!
