May 2023 Wrap Up

PERSONAL LIFE

At the beginning of the month I spent a week in France on vacation with my mom. We went to Ardèche, a region that has my whole heart and is basically my favourite place on earth. Going there, seeing the hills and the blooming broom and having the dry earth and stones beneath my feet, the smell of thyme and rosemary in the air,… it truly feels like coming home. At this point, southern France probably is my second home. I just enjoy being there so much. I took many walks with my mother and we also went for a bike tour. They are currently building the Voie Verte, transforming old train tracks into amazing cycling paths.

We also visited my very favourite place, the ruins of the village of Castelas on top of a hill with a beautiful view. I could just sit on the rock on thop of the hill forever, just looking. And missing my dog, who used to go up there with me. The Ardèche region truly is a place of memories for me, but also one that calms me, that makes me feel at home. Going there somehow makes everything alright.

I spent some time with friends from work which was quite nice! One of my colleagues got married and I went to the wedding celebration with other colleagues and we had a wonderful evening there. I also had a sleepover with other colleagues and two gaming / cake afternoons at my place which were all very fun! And we finally visited the Gustav Klimt experience and had ice cream at the canal in our city.

The rest of May wasn’t very interesting. I am working less hours now, which is amazing. I suddenly have so much more free time and I’m spending most of it reading. I am reading so much and I am enjoying it immensely!

So far, May has been the best month of the year.

BOOKS READ

king of wrathKing of Wrath by Ana Huang
Kings of Sin #1

Ruthless. Meticulous. Arrogant.
Dante Russo thrives on control, both personally and professionally.
The billionaire CEO never planned to marry—until the threat of blackmail forces him into an engagement with a woman he barely knows.
Vivian Lau, jewelry heiress and daughter of his newest enemy.
It doesn’t matter how beautiful or charming she is. He’ll do everything in his power to destroy the evidence and their betrothal.
There’s only one problem: now that he has her…he can’t bring himself to let her go.
Elegant. Ambitious. Well-mannered.
Vivian Lau is the perfect daughter and her family’s ticket into the highest echelons of high society.
Marrying a blue-blooded Russo means opening doors that would otherwise remain closed to her new-money family.
While the rude, elusive Dante isn’t her idea of a dream partner, she agrees to their arranged marriage out of duty.
Craving his touch was never part of the plan.
Neither was the worst thing she could possibly do: fall in love with her future husband.

There was so much back and forth which isn’t something I usually enjoy. But here, I could at least understand it. It feels natural in this story, fitting for the two protagonists. I genuinely enjoyed King of Wrath and I especially liked Vivian. I shall definitely continue the series!

im wasser sind wir schwerelosIm Wasser sind wir schwerelos by Tomasz Jedrowski
original title: Swimming in the Dark

I listened to the audiobook and I enjoyed it so much! Swimming in the Dark is probably one of my favourite books this year. I liked how the story was narrated, how Ludwik grows up and matures and develops opinions. I liked how he fit into the setting, or: didn’t fit into it but worked with it. I highly enjoyed the contrasts of protagonist and country, of stagnating and trying to push forward and for something more. I also enjoyed the aspect of freedom in Swimming in the Dark and how it changes throughout the story and what part love plays in it. This book was emotional, informative and heavy and it still has me in its clutches. It’s not a loud book, it is a quiet thing that worms its way into the mind of the reader, making you think and feel both melancholic and hopeful. Loved it.

what the river knowsWhat the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez

Bolivian-Argentinian Inez Olivera belongs to the glittering upper society of nineteenth century Buenos Aires, and like the rest of the world, the town is steeped in old world magic that’s been largely left behind or forgotten. Inez has everything a girl might want, except for the one thing she yearns for the her globetrotting parents – who frequently leave her behind when they venture off on their exploring adventures.
When she receives word of their tragic deaths, Inez inherits their massive fortune and a mysterious guardian, an archaeologist in partnership with his Egyptian brother-in-law. Yearning for answers, Inez sails to Cairo, bringing her sketch pads and an ancient golden ring her father sent to her for safekeeping before he died. But upon her arrival, the old world magic tethered to the ring pulls her down a path where she soon discovers there’s more to her parent’s disappearance than what her guardian led her to believe.
With her guardian’s infuriatingly handsome assistant thwarting her at every turn, Inez must rely on ancient magic to uncover the truth about her parent’s disappearance-or risk becoming a pawn in a larger game that will kill her.

I was so excited to read this book! It promised archaeology and egyptology, a no-nonsense female MC and a romance with arguments and banter. But it turned out to be different from what I expected and I didn’t necessarily like that. Not that it didn’t meet my expectations but because I just couldn’t get warm with the characters or the story. I did like Inez, headstrong and clever. But I’m not sure what to think of the other characters. There are so many mysteries that, instead of getting solved, just pile up more and more. Pair that with characters unable to properly communicate and you get whatever this was. There was such and endless back and forth between various parties and to be honest, I got bored with it. I could have shaken the characters at multiple times, yelling “this wouldn’t have happened if even a single one of you would have said something.” It was tiring. Also, the ancient Egypt aspect? Mh. I was looking forward to it a lot, but… it didn’t really make sense to me? I don’t want to go into great detail because of spoilers, but why would Cleopatra do.,.. things? Like, any of these?
Also. The magic system? I didn’t understand it at all. I really wanted to like this book but I simply didn’t.

das fliegende klassenzimmerDas fliegende Klassenzimmer by Erich Kästner

the dragon of new orleansThe Dragon of New Orleans by Genevieve Jack
The Treasure of Paragon #1

For 300 years, Gabriel Blakemore has survived in New Orleans after a coup in his native realm of Paragon scattered him and his dragon siblings across the globe. Now a jealous suitor’s voodoo curse threatens to end his immortal existence. His only hope is to find an antidote, one that may rest in a mortal woman. A lifesaving gift… After five years of unsuccessful treatment for her brain cancer, death is a welcome end for Raven Tanglewood. Her illness has become a prison her adventurous spirit cannot abide. Salvation comes in the form of Gabriel, who uses dragon magic to save her. A harrowing price… To Raven, the bond that results from Gabriel’s gift is another kind of captivity. Can Gabriel win Raven’s love and trust in time to awaken the life-saving magic within her? Or will his fiery personality and possessive ways drive her from his side and seal his fate?

This book was okay only for me. I enjoyed Raven and Gabriel’s relationship most while the rest of the book was meh. I did like the descriptions of New Orleans and its importance for magic, but I didn’t like the pacing of the book. The scenes sometimes didn’t really fit together and while some parts felt rushed, others were drawn out longer than necessary. It was a rather quick read but for me, it wasn’t really memorable.

malibu risingMalibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Malibu: August, 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over-especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva.
By midnight the party will be completely out of control.
By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames.
But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come bubbling to the surface.

I have no idea what to say about this book because I truly don’t know how I feel. On one hand, the story wasn’t super interesting, on the other I couldn’t put it down. I’m not normally a fan of different timelines, but here I enjoyed it. It helped shaping the characters and truly developing them. I liked the siblings and their relationship a lot, while I didn’t necessarily like everything they did. Taylor Jenkins Reid really made me get invested in the Riva family despite me not being remotely interested in them. I have very wierd, inexplicable feelings for this book and I’m not sure I’ll ever sort them out.

bitter spiritsBitter Spirits by Jenn Bennett
Roaring Twenties #1

It’s the roaring twenties, and San Francisco is a hotbed of illegal boozing, raw lust, and black magic. The fog-covered Bay Area can be an intoxicating scene, particularly when you specialize in spirits…
Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown’s illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act.
Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who’s more comfortable with guns than ghosts—unfortunately for him, he’s the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida’s supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her.
On the hunt for the curseworker responsible for the hex, Aida and Winter become drunk on passion. And the closer they become, the more they realize they have ghosts of their own to exorcise…

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a book by Jenn Bennett. This was my first adult novel by her and I enjoyed it a lot! She just knows how to write witty dialogues, charismatic characters that win your heart and great settings. While this book was by no means perfect, I highly enjoyed reading it!

fourth wingFourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
The Empyrean #1

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general-also known as her tough-as-talons mother-has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away . . . because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter-like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Alliances will be forged. Lives will be lost. Traitors will become allies . . . or even lovers. But sleep with one eye open because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Yes hello, this is my favourite book of the year so far. My heart is filled to the brim with love for this book. The way I almost strted crying at work because of it should be enough said. Listen, I don’t even know what to say about it anymore, I could just let out a long wail and hope for the best. What an amazing read. Absolutely blew me away and my body and soul are craving more of it. Read my full review of Fourth Wing here.

daughter of the moon goddessDaughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan
The Celestial Kingdom #1

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.
Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.
To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies across the earth and skies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.

It took a bit to get into the story but when it had me, I was absolutely captivated. I liked the writing style and how it was distanced and something like reading a legend, it was also deeply emotional and beautiful all at once. While inspired by a legend, Daughter of the Moon Goddess truly feels like one, too. I’ll definitely read book two in the duology!

made of starsMade of Stars by Jenna Voris

Shane and Ava are a team. He steals the aircraft, she charms their mark, and together they take what they need. Not even their distracting chemistry could get in the way. Until Shane was caught and left to rot on a prison moon. Now, freshly escaped from confinement and simmering with anger, he has his sights set on their biggest job yet.
Cyrus just graduated from the flight academy with a shiny new position lined up reporting to a well-respected general. On his very first assignment, he stops the outlaws in their tracks-or, he would have, if the annoyingly handsome Lark hadn’t fallen for Ava’s deception.
But when Shane uncovers a top-secret plot that would leave his home world at the mercy of Cyrus’s military leaders, he makes it his mission to thwart them at all costs. It isn’t long before Shane and Ava make interstellar headlines with each new heist. And thanks to a chance run-in with the rebels, Cyrus is caught between two versions of the truth. He must pick a side and fast. Because Shane and Ava will bring the planet to its knees…or die trying.

Made of Stars was such a ruthless book. Did I have expectations? No. Was I surprised anyways? Definitely yes. It was such an interesting, slow paced yet full of action story with unlikable characters you can’t help but root for. This was such a wild ride, flying through the stars and over dead land, prison breaks and just a smidge of romance. I’m not sure where I stand with Made of Stars but I definitely did enjoy it!

yellowfaceYellowface by R.F. Kuang

Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks.
So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.
So what if June edits Athena’s novel and sends it to her agent as her own work? So what if she lets her new publisher rebrand her as Juniper Song-complete with an ambiguously ethnic author photo? Doesn’t this piece of history deserve to be told, whoever the teller? That’s what June claims, and the New York Times bestseller list seems to agree.
But June can’t get away from Athena’s shadow, and emerging evidence threatens to bring June’s (stolen) success down around her. As June races to protect her secret, she discovers exactly how far she will go to keep what she thinks she deserves.
