A book says “tea” and I’m already sold. I’m a tea enthusiast. I don’t work in a tea shop for nothing. So of course I was immediately interested when the title of the book is The Tea Room Inheritance. Mix that with a small town, a dash of romance and a bit of mystery and I’m in. I’m not sure what I expected except for tea, so I went into this book with a free and open mind. The more I think about this book, the more I like it. I don’t mean to say I didn’t like it initially. On the contrary, I very much liked The Tea Room Inheritance and I just like it even more now. The more I think about it, the more it makes me feel. It was such a heartfelt story, making me feel both warm and enveloped in hugs while also making me cry because I could feel protagonist Belle’s grief so well.
The book starts off with Belle’s fiancé calling off the wedding. It is instantly clear that he and his whole family are a bunch of fools with too much money. But I could also feel for Belle and the grief she experienced over the split and then the added weight on her soul from her godmother’s death. Grief takes time and the book wonderfully shows that. It presents the crying and the hurt, the better phases, the fallbacks, those waves of grief where one moment everything is fine but then you see a photo and break down but then you get up and continue. I really, really liked how The Tea Room Inheritance deals with the phases of grief while still maintaining a generally light atmosphere. It made me feel but I still knew that Belle would get better.
And oh, did I love Belle’s character development. She goes from saying “yes” and taking the easy way to becoming a whole self, a person she is happy with. She comes to accept herself, her faults, grows stronger and accepts help from others while also giving her time and help freely to those who need it. Belle accepts new challenges and develops herself in both body and mind.
I also liked how she slowly finds love again. There is a process of becoming ready for romantic entanglement. Luke, the local vet, makes it easy for her to fall for him with his gentle and thoughtful being. The circumstances aren’t always easy for them but I loved how they act around each other, how they respect the other and both only grow in their relationship.
I also really liked the familial aspects the book has. A large focus was on families, how different they can be, the problems they have and how they can be overcome. We have Belle’s family, small, a great mother-daughter relationship and an emotionally abusive father. Then we have Luke, a baronet’s son, his brother and mother. And then there’s Diana, closely knit into the community but gone now, leaving behind her very own secrets of family. How each character dealt with those secrets and how they affected the people around them was very well written.
I think I expected a bit more romance but actually I’m so glad that the main focus of the book was on Belle as a character and on her relationship to the many people around her. The romance part was just a part in her new life that fit well into it but didn’t become the main focus.
Of course I also adored the tea aspect of the book. There are some teas mentioned that I love but have never read about in a novel. I’m especially talking about lapsang souchong here, one of my absolute favourites. Also pu’er tea?? And recipes with those teas. I’m absolutely inspired to try some of them myself. Alone for the tea aspect I’d recommend reading this book!
The Tea Room Inheritance was heartfelt and warm, highlighting the protagonist’s development. Emotions were very well written as were characters in general. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, characters, and, of course, the tea.
