Hoohoo, friends of the blade!
It’s wrap up time! September is behind us, autumn has arrived in Germany at full swing. I spent a week in Southern France and coming back to cold and rainy Germany has made me extremely fatigued. Anyways, that’s October and I am supposed to be talking about September here. So what did I do in September?
Well, I saw one of my favourite bands in their biggest ever concert. This is an ode to Kraftklub aus Karl-Marx-Stadt. I simply love their music, the lyrics, their very anti-right, anti-discrimination stance. They’re also a fantastic live band and really know what gets a crowd going. I had so much fun and I’d go to one of their shows again without thinking about it.
I also saw another of my favourite musicians in concert: Two Steps from Hell. Their epic music has been a part of my life for quite a while and they’ve become the soundtrack of my writing, cleaning, work outs and just life in general. Seeing them live and feeling their music in my very core has been such an emotional experience, both my flatmate and I had goosebumps all over.
It was still very hot in September and I had a free friday so I spontaneously took the train to Oranienbaum, then hiked through the forest and along the lake to Gräfenhainichen to take the train back. I think it was a hike of around 14km and it was such a good experience. I did the hike alone and for two hours in the forest I couldn’t hear or see any other human being and simply enjoyed nature, the smell of pines and the sun on my skin and the singing of birds. It was a beautiful experience and if you feel safe enough to hike alone, go for it.

Wien im Jahr 1966. Robert Simon verdient sein Brot als Gelegenheitsarbeiter auf dem Karmelitermarkt. Er ist zufrieden mit seinem Leben, doch zwanzig Jahre nach Ende des Krieges hat sich die Stadt aus ihren Trümmern erhoben. Überall wächst das Neue, und auch Simon lässt sich mitreißen. Er pachtet eine Gastwirtschaft und eröffnet sein eigenes Café. Das Angebot ist überschaubar, und genau genommen ist es gar kein richtiges Café, doch die Menschen aus dem Viertel kommen, und sie bringen ihre Geschichten mit – von der Sehnsucht, vom Verlust, vom unverhofften Glück. Sie kommen auf der Suche nach Gesellschaft, manche hoffen sogar auf die Liebe, und während die Stadt um sie herum erwacht, verwandelt sich auch Simons eigenes Leben.
Ich mochte Das Café ohne Namen sehr gerne. Robert Seethaler hat einfach ein wunderbares Gespür für Menschen und diese einserseits distanziert, andererseits sehr real und nahbar zu beschreiben. Dieser Roman folgt unterschiedlichsten Figuren in einem Abschnitt ihrer Leben, zeigt Höhen und Tiefen, Ängste und Hoffnungen, Liebe und Trauer. Die Atmosphäre war greifbar mit ihren kalten Wintern und dem heißen Punsch, aufgeladener Spannung wöhrend einer Schlägerei. Seethaler mischt genau die richtige Prise Humor in die Geschichte. Ich mochte, wie aus dem Leben gegriffen die Charaktere waren und wie sie sich alle entwickeln und weshalb. Das Café ohne Namen ist eine gelungene Aufnahme verschiedener Momente menschlichen Lebens.

I felt like rereading a beloved series this month and I enjoyed it so much the second time around! I remember loving it more in the past but it is still a wildly imaginative and well developed concept. I am a big fan of travelling between dimensions and I really enjoyed the discussions of destiny and morals and how far you could and should go when you’re using another person’s body.

Bis ein tragisches Unglück Almas gesamte Aufmerksamkeit fordert. Gertrude, die Cousine einer Kollegin, wurde tot in einer Wäschetrommel der Waschdampfanstalt gefunden. Die Polizei geht von Unfall oder Selbsttötung aus. Doch Alma erscheint beides eher unwahrscheinlich. Entgegen der Warnung ihres Freundes – Kriminalkommissar Ludwig Schiller – beginnt sie, Gertrudes Umfeld zu befragen. Und sieht im verruchten Tanzlokal Libelle etwas, das nicht für ihre Augen bestimmt ist. Wusste auch Gertrude davon? Und hat sie das das Leben gekostet?
Ich kann nicht mal sagen, was genau mich an der Alma-Täuber-Reihe so begeistert, aber ich war richtig begeistert, als ich den dritten Teil bei Storytel gesehen habe. Der Mix aus Geschichte, Krimi, Humor und tollen Charakteren ist einfach herrlich und genau leicht genug für jemanden wie mich, die eigentlich gar keine Krimis oder Thriller liest. Ich hoffe, da kommt noch mehr!

I loved this book so, so much! It took me a couple of chapters to get back into the story and reconnect to the characters but once I did, I couldn’t put the book down. It’s rich in details, well developed and developing characters and an interesting, dark and intense world building with an interesting magic concept. I liked some of the narrators more than others but I didn’t want to skip any chapters at all, wanting all I could get of the story. This book was so much fun! I really liked Chandler and Finn and how their relationship develops. But I also loved the personal development they each went through on a path to accepting themselves and acknowledging and acting on their wishes. I also enjoyed how sex positive Business or Pleasure was and how openly both characters discussed sex, not only with each other but with ex-partners or friends as well. I highly enjoyed this book!

Nun ist Phryne Fishers Spürsinn gefragt. Unerschrocken, mit Charme und Chuzpe ermittelt sie zwischen Tee und Tango, unter Puppenspielern und Halunken und schreckt weder vor ehemaligen Liebhabern noch vor Elefanten zurück …
Ich mochte die Miss Fisher Serie super gerne und habe mich an eines der Bücher gemacht. Die Figuren sind einfach herrlich und ihr Zusammenspiel mit ihrer Umgebung wunderbar dargestellt. Obwohl in den ersten beiden Stunden des Hörbuch eigentlich gar nichts passiert und die Geschichte mehr oder weniger vor sich hinplätschert, fand ich es sehr utnerhaltsam. Ich würde das Buch, ebenso wie andere der Reihe, einfach nur für Miss Fishers Einfallsreichtum, clevere Art und Humor lesen.

Hex and the City was full of fun, magic and sexual tension. I highly enjoyed this quick read with all its witchy drama, complicated family situations, flirting and historical action. I laughed a lot and rolled my eyes even more (but in a positive, affectionate way). Also it has nicknames!! I’m a sucker for nicknames between the main couple.
This definitely won’t be the last witchy book I’ll read this autumn!

Noch nie war Rache so süß.
Ich mochte das Buch wirklich gern und mochte die Charaktere ebenso. Die Geschichte ist sehr schön geschrieben und die verschiedenen Charaktere gut, aber nicht zu ausführlich ausgearbeitet. Doch ab der Zeit, in der sich das Paar endlich näherkommt, geht es irgendwie bergab, die Geschichte wird etwas wild und dann ist plötzlich das Ende da, das noch unglaublich viele Fragen offen lässt. Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett

My favourite read of the month! I absolutely loved this wild, imaginative and beautifully story of magic, academia and love. I loved the humor in this book, dry commentary and pure exasperation. I loved the wild landscapes and the magic interwoven with it. I also highly enjoyed the characters and how well they worked with each other, not only worked in the working sense of the word but also how they just… clicked. 10/10 would recommend this book for shenanigans of the magical and loving kind as well as some blood and murder.
