Hoohoo, friends of the blade!
Even though we’re well into October by now, I’ve managed to not write a single blog post. It’s been… a month so far. And I’m tired. But I finally sat down and finished typing the September wrap up so here we are. Despite September being weird work-wise, I read A LOT. And by a lot I mean that I read 12 books and most of them were amazing, too. September was a month of ups and downs, but read for yourself.
PERSONAL LIFE
Not much happened in September. I went to work, back home and to work again. For whatever reason, I don’t feel as stressed anymore and I am glad for it. I’ve not been feeling well for months and I have to say, stress not fucking up my stomach for once is quite nice.
I got a new camera lens! I finally got a f1.8 35mm lens and even though I haven’t had the time to take many photos, I’m already really happy with it. I can’t wait to go into nature and test it some more!
WHAT I READ
I had such an amazing reading month! I read a grand total of 12 books and I am so, so happy with it! Despite being really busy, I was in such a reading mood for all of September and basically flew threw the pages. I also think I read every day, sometimes not much but every day. Reading wise, September was an awesome month!
Lore Olympus Vol. 2 by Rachel Smythe
Persephone was ready to start a new life when she left the mortal realm for Olympus. However, she quickly discovered the dark side of her glamorous new home – from the relatively minor gossip threatening her reputation to a realm-shattering violation of her safety by the conceited Apollo – and she’s struggling to find her footing in the fast-moving realm of the gods.
Hades is also off-balance, fighting against his burgeoning feelings for the young goddess of spring while maintaining his lonely rule of the Underworld. As the pair are drawn ever closer, they must untangle the twisted webs of their past and present to build toward a new future.
I liked this a lot more than Vol. 1! I loved seeing the progress the characters make and how their choices influence each other. Not that I approve of those choices always, but the seem fitting for what Smythe makes of the Greek deities. The art style wasn’t for me initially but the more I see it, the more it grows on me!
The Vermilion Emporium by Jamie Pacton
It was a day for finding things . . .

When Quinta meets Twain outside the Emporium, two things happen: One, Quinta starts to fall for this starlight boy, who uses his charm to hide his scars. Two, they enter the store and discover a book that teaches them how to weave starlight into lace.
Soon, their lace catches the eye of the Casorina, the ruler of Severon. She commissions Quinta and Twain to make her a starlight dress and will reward them handsomely enough to make their dreams come true. However, they can’t sew a dress without more material, and the secret to starlight’s origins has been lost for centuries. As Quinta and Twain search the Emporium for answers, though, they discover the secret might not have been lost—but destroyed. And likely, for good reason.
The Vermilion Emporium is such a beautiful book that is gorgeously written and has such a magical world despite it missing magic. It has this whole magical atmosphere that makes you feel like you can step through the pages and into the story and find everything around you brimming with life and potential. I still haven’t put my thoughts in order regarding this book. I’m really not sure what I think about it. On one hand it was a challenging story about sex and power, how we use both and where it gets us in life. It was an exploration of intimacy and need. On the other hand, I was a bit confused and I also didn’t like any of the characters which made it hard to connect with any of them. I wasn’t drawn into the story and felt like I was looking at it from the outside but I feel like maybe that was the whole point? It is definitely an interesting story and I’d love to discuss it!

And what happens when that plan involves a wedding, honeymoon and an old school bylaw stating that the school will pay for the entire event…
Surely Posy has thought everything through, hasn’t she?
I truly wanted to love this book, but it developed in a direction I absolutely did not like. It all fell very flat to me and none of the characters were really sympathetic. Not the best enemies to lovers book I’ve read, even though the concept was interesting. Read my full review of The Reunion.

I really liked this duology even though I definitely liked the first book more! I enjoyed the whole contest and how big a part of the story sewing was. The start was quite slow, but it didn’t matter because I was enthralled by the world and its inhabitants. Book two was very focused on the lovestory and the dialogue between the MC & the love interest felt a bit repetitive and I felt myself getting bored. Still, I liked the story as a whole and how sewing and magic were interwoven with each other!

Stephanie Garber has not let me down before and she definitely has no plan to do so anytime soon! The Ballad of Never After was fantastic in every sense of the word and I loved it so, so much. All the twists and turns and the lovestory that can’t be and the lovestory that can all had me on the edge of my seat (or lying in my bed and NOT fall asleep!). My eyes were practically glued to the pages and I read this book in a day. And when I found out this wasn’t a duology like I thought it was for a year? Well, see me staring into nothing because the ending was not what I expected and I definitely need more of the story asap.

The sorcerer Beelzebub Preposteror and his witchy aunt must complete their annual quota of evil deeds before midnight. But a small cat and a raven are waiting to foil their plans and save the world.
The way I just adore Michael Ende’s books so much?! This was already the third of his books we read in our classics book club and I believe that every single one of us loved it. It’s surprisingly fitting for the times we live in, especially when it comes to the views of nature and sickness. What I loved most was the relationship of the cat and the raven and how they went from enemies to best friends and saviors of the world, or at least Germany. The book was fun, interesting and I loved all the games with language, too!

Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson

It is a revenant, a malevolent being that threatens to possess her the moment she drops her guard. Wielding its extraordinary power almost consumes her—but death has come to Loraille, and only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a high relic, has any chance of stopping it. With all knowledge of vespertines lost to time, Artemisia turns to the last remaining expert for help: the revenant itself.
As she unravels a sinister mystery of saints, secrets, and dark magic, her bond with the revenant grows. And when a hidden evil begins to surface, she discovers that facing this enemy might require her to betray everything she has been taught to believe—if the revenant doesn’t betray her first.
This was such a great read to start into autumn. It’s a bit spooky, definitely atmospheric and values friendships and own strength and believe a lot. I liked the darkness of the story that was peppered with light and hope and sarcastic commentary of a spirit. I liked Artemisia who isn’t exactly very into humans but feels at home with a spirit immediately and strives for a better future for all. I liked her sharp wit and I love, love, love Margaret Rogerson for giving her protagonists sharp blades they know how to wield efficiently. Thank you Miss Margaret for your service.
Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood
Like an avenging, purple-haired Jedi bringing balance to the mansplained universe, Bee Königswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do? If NASA offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project-a literal dream come true after years scraping by on the crumbs of academia-Marie would accept without hesitation. Duh. But the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with Levi Ward.
Sure, Levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. And sure, he caught her in his powerfully corded arms like a romance novel hero when she accidentally damseled in distress on her first day in the lab. But Levi made his feelings toward Bee very clear in grad school-archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away.
Now, her equipment is missing, the staff is ignoring her, and Bee finds her floundering career in somewhat of a pickle. Perhaps it’s her occipital cortex playing tricks on her, but Bee could swear she can see Levi softening into an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas…devouring her with those eyes. And the possibilities have all her neurons firing. But when it comes time to actually make a move and put her heart on the line, there’s only one question that matters: What will Bee Königswasser do?
Objectively, this book probably isn’t a great book. But it was fun, quick, romantic and subjectively, a fucking amazing book. Some parts of the story were truly ridiculous but it made me laugh and feel with the characters and I had such a good time reading it, this is plainly said one of my favourite books this year. I got what I expected and even more.
The Foxhole Court & The Raven King by Nora Sakavic
Neil Josten is the newest addition to the Palmetto State University Exy team. He’s short, he’s fast, he’s got a ton of potential—and he’s the runaway son of the murderous crime lord known as The Butcher.
Signing a contract with the PSU Foxes is the last thing a guy like Neil should do. The team is high profile and he doesn’t need sports crews broadcasting pictures of his face around the nation. His lies will hold up only so long under this kind of scrutiny and the truth will get him killed.
But Neil’s not the only one with secrets on the team. One of Neil’s new teammates is a friend from his old life, and Neil can’t walk away from him a second time. Neil has survived the last eight years by running. Maybe he’s finally found someone and something worth fighting for.
This was my 4th reread of the series and I uhhhh… am as obsessed as ever. I love this story to pieces. I know, it’s a highly probelmatic one, but I enjoy it so much and it brings me comfort. So much comfort. I feel at home in these books and I am so glad that I can read it again and again whenever I want. Thank you Miss Nora for writing these masterpieces.
